The 2025 Met Gala, held on May 5 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, embraced the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, celebrating the rich tradition of Black dandyism and its profound influence on fashion, identity, and resistance within the Atlantic diaspora.
Theme & Exhibition
Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s seminal book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition delves into the aesthetics and cultural significance of Black dandyism. The exhibit is organized into 12 thematic sections—such as Ownership, Freedom, and Beauty—and features garments, art, and photography from creators like Torkwase Dyson and Tyler Mitchell. This marks the museum’s first menswear-centered theme since 2003.
